Session 2A – stories

Clara Gade

My selected work: “Baby it’s cold outside” – James Taylor & Nathalie ColeĀ (song)

This Christmas song, as the majority of others from the genre, does a great job of creating an image of the holiday spirit in the mind of the listener. As the fest entails, Christmastime is a time of family and friends gathering together, cold weather outside with snow, which makes the act of staying inside all the more cozy and romantic. This song depicts this emotion- of all that’s outside to be so cold and white from snow, and all inside cozy and warm this is done by mentioning elements such as the fireplace, the record player playing music, a couple glasses of wine by the fire.

The characters of the song are two; supposedly one man and one woman who are enjoying the shelter from the cold together, in what I imagine to be a warm cottage house with a fireplace and wooden furniture (just because it’s typical of cold withstanding cottages). The mood is very relaxed and romantic, as the woman grudgingly states that she should go back home but is finally convinced by the man that she should stay. In that moment, the couple is talking calmly by the fire drinking some wine and listening to music, while outside the snows falls.

My mother will start to worry – Beautiful, what’s your hurry?
Father will be pacing the floor – Listen to the fireplace roar
So really I’d better scurry – Beautiful, please don’t hurry
Maybe just a half a drink more – Put some records on while I pour
