This image is in black and white. It is focused on the middle of the sea where we can clearly see that is raining this, in my opinion, makes the fact that is raining stand out even more. However there is a background which as well takes a main role on the image. It is not sharp at all but the elements are clearly distinguished.

On the other hand, this other  image’s center of attention are the mountains on the background which are not focused. Since it is a sunrise there is a lot of contrast on this picture between all the peaks which give different grey tonalities.

The contrast on this image is what I like the most. The shadows of the steps that are on both sides create a minimal effect, since it ends up just being two colours.

On this image the main character is the monk who’s sitting on the stairs. The fact that the stairs are black and his clothes are bright orange create a great contrast between both that clarifies that he is the theme on this picture.

This image was taken at the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. When the brine is created it gives this mirror image. The clouds make a great contrast on the sky and what , in my opinion, makes this image fascinating is that if you look at it upside down it looks the same as the original. Even though the man on the middle of the image is black and should stand out, the background is, in this case, the center of attention.

This image uses mainly a palette of purples which go form light to dark. Even though there are similar colours on each flower there’s something different ( a colour, its type, form, etc) on each. The light colour flowers stand out form the others, but all of them are the center of the image.

This image is in black and white. The background is translucent and since there isn’t a lot of light it can barely be seen. The main focus of the image is the hand that’s on the middle but, like the background, it can hardly be seen and the ray of light that goes through it is what makes it stand out even more.

Thanks, these are beautiful images and thoughtful observations. Both observations are targeted at the symbolical values of the images, which are greatly defined by what the images represent. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with your remarks that reach for the deeper meaning, I’d like you to try and also focus on the “surface” of things, and consider the purely visual aspect of these photos. In other words, yes, we are primed to perceived landscapes and the beach as calm and relaxing, but there are so many ways to take a photo of the very same subjects – so in what ways the particular visual aspects of these photos support the emotional charge that’s embedded in the subjects they represent? I am getting a bit ahead of myself, as this will be the focus of our next classes, but for now just try to think of these images the both ways: symbolical and visual.

Oh, and by the way, please put together both your class work and the homework in one post.

Third image = this is more of a kind of comment I would like you all to do in this exercise, trying to forget what the image represents and what meaning it attempts to convey and just think of it in a purely visual way. Nice!
